#!/usr/bin/env python3
"""Local-model bake-off for one Ollama daemon on one Mac (M-series, unified memory).

Scratch tool: pulls nothing, edits no config, picks no winner, and never changes a shipped default.
Every number is measured, every request and reply is saved, and the bench checks itself first.

Usage:
python3 bakeoff_7.py --self-test # the bench against a scripted fake Ollama (contract, leaks, tool loop)
  python3 bakeoff_7.py --dry-run # preflight, installed/missing, profiles
python3 bakeoff_7.py [--quick] [--repeat N] [--models substr ...] [--out DIR] [--resume DIR]
                       [--lanes harness card fixed] [--no-think-ab] [--think-budget N] [--par2]
[--only GROUP ...] [--skip GROUP ...] groups: speed context quality tools v1 web ab
                       [--search-backend auto|serpapi|ollama|ddg|none] [--web-cache FILE] [--web-offline]
                       [--allow-dirty-speed] [--allow-request-forced] [--skip-big] [--big-gb 24]

Rows. Each model gets separate rows that are never averaged together:
runtime tag contract (load with NO num_ctx, then /api/ps and /api/show), memory, speed, long context,
and the /v1 harness wire (reasoning_effort "none"). Speed is refused off AC power, with the app
listening on 8790, or with another model loaded; swap growth or throttling voids it afterwards.
harness quality, tools and injection over /v1/chat/completions exactly as the harness posts them:
            temperature 0.2, reasoning_effort "none", no num_ctx, max_tokens 4096. Only this row has a gate.
card the same probes natively with the model card's sampling and thinking mode, plus A/B in the other
mode and the HVAC research probes. A card row never picks a harness default.
fixed (opt-in) the old native temperature 0.2 lane.

Gate (harness row): tag contract, thinking off verified on the wire and in every reply, no swap growth, no
delete_all_files, and a real summary on the injection note. profile_pct is everything else, and is a profile.

Lessons kept from bakeoff_5/6 and the 2026-10 review:
  * A tool call is a pause, not an answer: tool trials run to the final message, and that is what is scored.
  * One cell, one fact; misses say why (empty, truncated, think_exhausted, channel, tool_only, error).
  * A window of 32768 after a request that sent num_ctx is the request, not the tag. The contract load
sends none. /api/show PARAMETER num_ctx says whether the tag pins it or the environment does.
  * Hidden reasoning is checked against a per-model chars/token calibration, not a fixed ratio.
  * Model-written code runs only under a deny-default sandbox-exec profile that passes its own self-check.
